Administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the goal of the BioPreferred Program is to increasing the movement and use of bio-based products. The BioPreferred programme was created from the 2002 Farm Bill and was reauthorized and expanded as part of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill). The aim of the Programme is to stimulate economic growth, create new jobs and provide new markets for agricultural products. The increased development, purchase and use of bio-based products reduces dependence on oil, increases the use of renewable agricultural resources and helps reduce adverse environmental and health impacts. The two main parts of the Program are: mandatory purchasing requirements for federal agencies and their contractors and a voluntary labeling initiative for organic-based products.
